Climate

Making the decision of when to travel to the UK will obviously be affected by personal circumstances, but you may well wish to take into account the notoriously fickle British Weather!

Bearing in mind the unpredictability of British weather those wishing to steer clear of our more inclement conditions may be wise to travel in the Summer months, when at least the law of averages dictates the best chance of milder climes. Visiting in the summer months also ensures that all our popular tourist attractions are open and ready for business, however, remember that consequently these will be far busier during this period.

Obviously, travelling in the colder months means that the crowds and queues will be heavier, but this has to be considered alongside the fact that during this time of the year many attractions are closed down, (this is especially true outside of London). For those travelling on a tight budget, the colder months may well offer the prospect of cheaper flights and accommodation.

As sad as it may seem all we 'Brits' ever seem to do is talk about the Weather. In actual fact, on average, our climate is quite mild, and although the weather can change from torrential rain to blazing sunshine in a matter of minutes, we do not generally suffer from the extremes of temperature that some larger countries and continents are subjected to.

Although Britain is relatively small compared to many countries we do have differing weather conditions from area to area. The West coast of the UK tends to be warmer and wetter due to the influence of the Gulf Stream, whereas the East coast tends to be colder and drier due to Eastern Siberian-borne winds. Also, remember it generally gets colder the further north you travel! This is obviously not always the case, but is a widely accepted generalisation.

It is usually safe to assume that the Winter months of November through to February are colder and wetter than other times of the year, and also bring shorter daylight hours with as few as 8 hours in the month of December.

March's arrival sees the onset of Spring, although it can still be a touch frigid, even in southern England. October is typically a fringe month with a good mixture of sunshine and showers. April to September offer the best chance of touring our shores with the sun on your back!
